Mark Carter of Peloton Sweeping Service in Orange, CA has provided ongoing efforts in the role of improving professionalism, image and even profitability within the sweeping industry.
Based on this story in ForConstructionPros.com, Pavement Maintenance magazine will be awarding Carter for his service in the power sweeping industry during a ceremony on February 27, 2017 at NPE – National Pavement Expo.
He will be the recipient of the Alan Curtis Industry Service Award based on among other criteria, his extensive involvement with the North American Power Sweeping Association (NAPSA) in all its incarnations. In 2019, Carter will become the longest-tenured NAPSA Board member.
Back to the Beginnings
Before the existence of NASPSA – our industry’s highly regarded association – Carter attended the second-ever meeting of the National Contract Sweepers Association (NCSA) in 1980. He recalls: “That really set the stage for me of what running a sweeping business should be like and what it should be like leading an organization.”
After attending more NCSA meetings and becoming involved with the group at a committee level, Carter helped develop a presentation on accounting in the sweeping industry. This presentation to industry veterans in turn led to a request to be Vice President of NCSA.
With NCSA interested in both attracting younger members and growing its membership, Carter served as Vice President from 1985-1986 and then President from 1986-1988.
Throughout his many years of involvement with the association, Carter has chaired or been an integral member of NAPSA committees including: Certified Sweeper Company, Certified Sweeper Operator, Power Sweeping Standard, Website, Marketing, and Education.
He received NAPSA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
Among other interesting industry-related activities, Carter is called upon as an expert witness for the sweeping industry several times a year. “Not only is that interesting but what I learn in those cases I am able to bring back to both my business and to the industry,” he says.
As one of the founding board members of 1-800-SWEEPER, he served for seven years on our board. “Seven years of almost weekly meetings might seem like a lot. However, the friendships and industry insights are priceless.” We are extremely proud of his contributions to our industry, and congratulate him on this well-deserved award.
